A few days back, in the lift, a young girl of about 10 years or so asked me......what should I call you - Aunty or Didi? I replied saying that she could call me whatever she wanted to. She immediately said, "But you don't look like an aunty". By now, I was feeling quite happy.....thinking here's a ten year old who tells me that I look like a didi :-)
The ego came crashing down almost immediately once she went on to explain that I didn't look like an aunty because I didn't wear sindoor. She also said that she knew that once people were married they "had to" do that and that her mother religiously applied sindoor every day.
How early on we condition the minds of our young and tell them something has to be done in a certain way. I hope that I am not passing on any such 'knowledge' to my LG.

We always do the "profiling". It is not good. That is what that kid was taught. If someone is old and not good looking and keeps to himself, he must be mentally retarded.
